The following is a scanned version of an AIAA
meeting publication. It is my first airborne temperature profiler
publication, and it presents the idea that vertical compression (i.e.,
a thinning inversion layer) can trigger CAT. I still think
this idea has merit, based on an abundance of observational evidence that
appears to support it. For the past 18 years I've been waiting for
theoretical dynamical atmosperhic modelers to either shoot it down or validate
it.
